More than half a billion smartphones with 5G were sold by the end of 2021. The fact is: the triumph of the new mobile phone standard can no longer be stopped – despite all the conspiracy theories. All newer smartphones are 5G-capable, but especially with older or used phones the question arises whether they can do 5G or not. We give you an overview.
The large mobile phone providers are investing enormous sums in the 5G expansion. Even in smaller cities, you can use the new mobile phone standard without any problems these days – even if the download speeds are not yet noticeable everywhere. Which mobile phone can do 5G?

5G-capable iPhones
2020 was the year Apple first built a 5G modem into iPhones. The first 5G-capable iPhone was the iPhone 12 models. Since then, Apple has built 5G modems into all iPhones. Unlike Samsung, for example, Apple has not given earlier iPhones a 5G upgrade.

Samsung smartphones with 5G
Samsung has been building 5G modems into its smartphones since 2019. In the meantime, Samsung is one of the mobile phone providers with the largest variety of models for 5G phones. Fortunately, 5G-capable phones can be recognised by the suffix “5G”, for example “Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G” or “Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G”.

5G phones from Huawei
Despite the sanctions, Huawei phones are still very popular and widely used. Huawei smartphones can easily keep up with iPhones and Samsung in terms of camera, even if you have to do without Google services in return. 5G-enabled smartphones from Oppo
Oppo has established itself in this country as a serious alternative to Huawei and Xiaomi and has steadily gained market share in recent years. Oppo already launched a 5G-capable smartphone at the end of 2018. As with Samsung, 5G-capable smartphones can be recognised by the “5G”, however, the manufacturer is still launching variants without 5G support in 2022. Xiaomi has the cheapest 5G phone
If you are looking for an affordable 5G phone, you will find it at the Chinese Xiaomi. Here, too, 5G-capable smartphones can be recognised by the “5G” in their names, such as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite 5G and the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro 5G. However, this is no guarantee, as the Xiaomi Poco F3 proves, which comes with 5G functionality.
