iPhone 13 vs. 14: These are the differences

7 September 2022
iPhone 14

The iPhone 13 is history, the iPhone 14 is waiting in the wings. At the September event, Apple presented the latest iPhone generation, which – at least for the Pro models – comes with a new design and other improvements. We present the differences between the individual iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models and clarify whether an upgrade is worthwhile!

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 is the new entry into the iPhone world and replaces the small iPhone 13 mini with immediate effect. After the sales figures of the handy mini iPhone remained below expectations, Apple decided to discontinue the 13 mini. For the first time, Apple is installing an older chip in a current smartphone – which is also due to the chip shortage and the current world market situation, as we already wrote in our smartphone trends text for 2022.

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro

The Pro models get a notchless display for the first time – but with a pill-like cut-out on the display. The notch does not disappear completely, but it is rethought. Ingenious: Apple uses this cut-out on the display for a feature called “Dynamic Island” – depending on the app and use case, the area around the new notch displays information, for example when the AirPods connect to the iPhone, music is playing or a device is charging.

iPhone 13 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max

If you have big hands or want the best of the best, go for the huge Pro Max model. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the most powerful iPhone on the market, but it also costs a hefty CHF 1229.-. Here, too, you get the new notch embedded in the display with the Dynamic Island feature.

iPhone 14 Plus

The iPhone 14 Plus is the latest addition to the iPhone family and marks the return of the bigger-sized Plus model, last seen on the iPhone 8 Plus. The size is the same as the Pro Max, but the omission of some Pro features makes the iPhone 14 Max a cheaper alternative, even if the price is still very high at CHF 1049.-.

Is it worth upgrading?

As you can see from the tables above: The changes in the iPhone 14 models are rather minor compared to the previous year’s model. For reasons of sustainability, we do not recommend upgrading from an iPhone 13, especially since the prices have also been raised significantly. Even with an iPhone 12 or 11, the upgrade is not worth it. But if you own an iPhone Xs or older, you are well advised to upgrade. iOS 16 runs on devices from the iPhone 8 of 2017 onwards. If you don’t have to have the latest smartphone, you should also take a look at the iPhone 13 family. Many of the older iPhones are now significantly cheaper.
