A mini smartphone is a handy alternative to mobile phones with over 6-inch large displays that are widely used today. But which smartphone manufacturers still produce mini-size smartphones, i.e. screens under 6 “?
We have put together a selection of the mini cell phones currently available in Switzerland; also from clamshell phones whose screen is over 6 inches, but which when folded are much smaller than a 6 inch smartphone.

Apple mini smartphone
The manufacturer Apple recently launched a mini smartphone: the iPhone 12 mini. It was released on November 13, 2020. With its 5.4 “screen , Apple’s mini mobile phone is very compact. It is the first ever mini smartphone in an iPhone series. This is probably mainly due to the fact that in the past Apple made it important not to be too big Building devices so that you could use the iPhone with one hand.
But since the iPhones got bigger and bigger over the years, it was time to offer a small device again with the iPhone 12 mini to those Apple fans who appreciated the handiness of the iPhones. With its dimensions of 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4 mm, it is considerably smaller than the iPhone 12, which measures 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm. Incidentally, the iPhone 12 mini is a mini smartphone with dual SIM (nano SIM and eSIM).
Although the iPhone 12 mini is not so ideal for typing messages and watching films and photos, given its small size, the iPhone 12 mini is very suitable as a second mobile phone, especially if you want to adapt your mobile infrastructure to the 5G age . Because the iPhone 12 mini, like all other iPhones from the 12 series has a 5G modem.
All in all, the iPhone 12 mini is currently the best mini mobile phone on the market in terms of price / performance ratio: it has 5G, a screen that is not too small, with 64 GB of storage space, even in the cheapest version, and a convincing camera setup.
PALM mini cell phone in credit card format
Viewed from the screen, the PALM Pepito is one of the smallest mini smartphones that can currently be bought in Switzerland. It is just 96.6 mm high and 50.6 mm wide. This means that the PALM mini cell phone is not much taller and even narrower than a credit card, which measures 85.6 x 53.98 mm as standard.
In terms of thickness, the mini smartphone from PALM is 7.4 mm on par with the iPhone 12 mini, but the Pepito is much lighter: It weighs just 62.5 g, while the iPhone 12 mini weighs 133 g , so more than twice as much.
With 32 GB, the PALM Pepito doesn’t have a lot of internal storage space. Nevertheless, it has everything you would expect from a smartphone; including a front camera, a rear camera and a SIM card slot.
Like the iPhone 12 mini, the PALM Pepito is the ideal second mobile phone, although unlike the iPhone 12 mini it does not have a 5G modem, but rather provides a maximum of one LTE connection.
Samsung mini smartphone
The last true Samsung mini smartphone from the Galaxy range was the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini with its 4.5 inch screen, which was released in 2014. The successor could be the Galaxy 10e released in 2019 with its 5.8-inch screen. The dimensions of the Samsung 10e are 142.2 x 69.9 x 7.9 mm.
However, when folded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G from 2020 is smaller than the Galaxy 10e, at least in terms of height, where the closed flip phone is 87.4 mm. However, the Z Flip 5G is slightly wider at 73.6 mm and thicker than the 10e at 17.3 mm. When opened, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G measures 167.3 × 73.6 × 7.2 mm. Like the iPhone 12 mini, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is also a mini smartphone with dual SIM (nano SIM and eSIM).
In view of the price of CHF 1549, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G is not suitable as a second mobile phone. With an internal storage space of 256 GB, the Z Flip 5G can also be used as the main phone without any problems. And the flip phone from Samsung also feels at home in the 5G network.
The Motorola flip phone is also mini
Speaking of clamshell phone: Who does not remember the Motorola Razr, which was the ultimate design eye-catcher in the noughties. The coolness when opening and closing came on top. Again and again there was speculation that the Motorola Razr will be released again. In 2020 Motorola launched the Razr (2020), a foldable smartphone version of the Motorola Razr.
The new Motorola Razr (2020) measures only 94 x 72 x 14 mm when folded and 172 x 72 x 6.9 mm when opened. In autumn 2020, the Motorola Razr (2020) was followed by the Motorola Razr (5G), which has a 5G modem. The Motorola Razr (5G) is a little smaller than its predecessor with a height of 91.7 mm when folded. Accordingly, it is also slightly lower at 169.2 mm when opened. The screen size of 6.2 “has not changed. The Razr (5G) is, however, 2 mm thicker and 0.6 mm wider than the Razr (2020).
Like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the Motorola Razr (5G) is too expensive to be considered as a second mobile phone. The Razr (5G) costs a proud CHF 1599, but not only has a 5G modem, but also convenient internal storage space of 256 GB
