All those holiday photos: 10 ideas to breathe new life into your holiday snaps
The holiday is over, but one thing remains: The photos you took with your smartphone. We show you 10 ideas to breathe new life into your holiday photos.
The holiday tan fades, as do memories, holiday acquaintances fall asleep. But for most of us, the photos remain stored in the cloud for eternity. This doesn’t have to be the case.
Every beginning is hard: Sort your pictures!
Even if sorting and tidying up pictures is a nuisance, it makes everything so much easier. If you want to show your snapshots to your family, they don’t have to see the same picture 10 times. It also frees up valuable (cloud) storage space and prevents you from holding a washed-out, pale poster in your hands instead of the supposedly beautiful, sharp photo on your phone.
This is how you proceed:
- Mark all the photos you have taken. The easiest way to do this is to use the search function, which is very sophisticated on both iOS and Android. Enter either your holiday dates or your holiday country, and you will only see the respective photos. Mark the photos and move them to an album or folder.
- Go through each picture. We recommend that you view the photos on a tablet or TV. A lot of mobile phone snapshots turn out to be a blurry pile of pixels on a larger screen.
- If you have two or more identical photos, choose the one that takes up less space.
- If you have a little more time, you can crop, straighten or even professionally edit the images.
- Delete bad photos. Some photos can still be saved (especially if they were taken in HEIC or RAW format), but with JPEG photos you should not get your hopes up too high. This includes, for example, blinking people, overexposed skies or unsightly objects in the back- or foreground.
- If you don’t have time for this activity, you can also use apps that detect duplicates. However, free apps are often very limited – if you want decent results without limitations, you often have to pay.
It’s an annoying task, but fortunately you only do it once.
- Digital picture frame
Digital picture frames are already available for little money. Even if the built-in hardware cannot compete with a smartphone, they are very economical to use – ideal, because the device should not display more than pictures and videos anyway. Videos? That’s right – unlike analogue picture frames, digital picture frames can also play videos and GIFs. Depending on the device, you get your content either via app, USB cable or SD card on the picture frame.
- Poster
The family photo in front of the Colosseum? The beautiful sunset in the Caribbean? The couple’s picture in front of the Eiffel Tower? Such unique moments can be immortalised on a poster. The cheapest option is a paper poster. It’s a bit more expensive if you want to immortalise your picture on a canvas. Photos on aluminium or acrylic glass are the most expensive, but make the most impression.
- Photo book
A photo book is also a great option. The advantage: you always have something physical in your hand. It is easier to show to the family than a tablet or mobile phone and is more personal. A photo book is also easier to organise in regards to trips, places and dates. Although it takes a little more effort at first, the many providers in this area will help you. And since you already have your photos and videos sorted and tidied up, the whole thing goes faster. 😜
- Wallpapers, Widgets
If you want to keep your holiday pictures to yourself, you can also use the functions of your smartphone. Although setting a random wallpaper is not as trivial as on PCs, it is possible with apps such as Backgrounds from Google (only on Android) or the iOS Photo Shuffle function under Settings > Wallpapers. If you don’t want to change your wallpaper right away, you can also use widgets.
- Phone cases
Another great way to immortalise your holiday is with phone cases. You can also have these printed by many internet providers. Not only do they look beautiful, they also protect your smartphone from drops and shocks. Just make sure that the cover fits your smartphone. It’s also a great gift idea!
- Puzzle
Puzzles are a very healthy activity: Doing puzzles reduces stress and improves mental health. Printing your holiday photos on a puzzle is therefore not only a good idea as a gift for others, but also for you! It’s up to you whether you want to use it as a finished wall mural or put the pieces back in the box.
- Pictures as abstract works of art
Let’s face it: smartphone photos look so beautiful these days, there’s no need for Instagram-style filters. But sometimes the holiday photo as a wall mural doesn’t match the interior style, or you want something more unusual. That’s when apps that turn your pictures into works of art can help. And, as we already wrote in our photography guide: Sometimes it can be worthwhile to deliberately break the rules and work with tilting lines and slanted images, for example. They also look good as murals.
- Calendar
You can create a holiday mood all year round with a calendar. As with photo books or phone cases, there are many suppliers where you can have your calendars printed. They also make a great gift.
- Magnets & Buttons
Most magnets are more of an ugly accessory than a beautiful eye-catcher. But did you know that you can have magnets printed? Some suppliers also offer magnets in the shape of a heart – perfect for that beautiful couple’s photo in front of the Eiffel Tower! What could be more romantic than seeing your partner when you open the fridge in the morning?
- Postcard
You can send postcards all year round, not just from your holidays. Whether for yourself, as a greeting in between, as a birthday card or as a Christmas postcard – there are countless uses for postcards you create yourself. And they are even more personal than the cheap cards from the supermarket.
