You should keep an eye on these 4 smartphone trends in 2024
The year 2023 is over – and with it the major price shocks and delivery problems that have kept the world on tenterhooks over the last two years. For many tech companies, last year was a year to forget: Rising interest rates worldwide have made borrowing extremely unattractive – and so far the growth of many tech companies has been one thing above all: debt-financed. Many platforms have introduced new payment obligations or increased their prices.
Smartphones are being supplied with updates for longer
Fewer and fewer smartphones are being sold worldwide. The price increases have also made themselves felt in people’s wallets. At the same time, more and more people are attaching importance to sustainability – and there have been no new ground-breaking hardware features for a long time. The major manufacturers have recognized this – and now promise to provide their top models with new updates for several years. What has been practiced by Apple for years will now also be introduced to Android smartphones. Just Just recently, Samsung promised to provide its Galaxy phones with updates for seven years. The same applies to Google and the Pixel 8 series.
Artificial intelligence will find its way into cell phones
Artificial intelligence was highly hyped last year. The AI models from ChatGPT, Google and others were not able to deliver on all their promises, but the direction of travel is clear: there will no longer be an internet without intelligent chatbots. Last year, image creation AIs found their way into the Android operating system. Our forecast: This year, AI will be introduced in other areas, such as voice assistants or as support in text apps such as emails, messages or notes.
XR: Augmented reality will find its way into our everyday lives
Is Apple also ushering in a new era with the new Vision Pro? We predict so: Yes. However, as with smartwatches, it will be a few years before XR headsets become mainstream. Nevertheless, Samsung, Google and co. will follow suit and announce similar products and adapt their respective operating systems accordingly, for example with the introduction of spatial photos and videos, avatars or the aforementioned artificial intelligence.
Legislators go after the corporations
What we wrote in our December news will continue in 2024: For a long time, Apple, Amazon and co. had a free hand on their platforms. Because Alphabet pays billions to Apple, Google remained the default search on iOS devices. Because Apple pays billions to Amazon, the product pages of Apple devices remain free of advertising, competitor and junk offers. The tech companies gave each other preferential treatment. But times have changed – it is not only in the EU that numerous laws such as the Digital Markets Act and Digital Service Act have been passed. Other countries such as Japan are also considering similar laws. Even in the home country, the time of the Wild West is over. The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are investigating the business practices of tech companies. The first rulings in this direction will be made in 2024, but the resulting consequences will be with us for years to come.
